Sapaio

Podere Sapaio is located in the Bolgheri wine area of the Maremma, a land that runs parallel to the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno, named after the town of Bolgheri.

The owner Massimo Piccin, purchased the estate in 1999 and planted his vineyards one year later in 2000.

The estate produces just two wines: Sapaio, a Bolgheri DOC Superiore made with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and petit verdot; and Volpolo, a Bolgheri DOC made from cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot.

Their first vintage in 2004 was already described as “excellent, a prelude of things to come,” an admirable accomplishment for such young vines. Though relatively new on the Bolgheri wine scene, Massimo his consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini and winemaker Alessandro Nannelli quickly cultivated a devoted following with their wines, that in true Bolgheri fashion, show a great ability to age beautifully.

Podere Sapaio has been for some years now committed to organic agriculture. Starting with vintage 2017, they are also ocially certied. Piccin believes this is the only way to pursue an ethical and sustainable agriculture and produce healthy and wholesome products while respecting our nature.
