2009

Wine Searcher: Italy delivering an excellent year for both Barolo and Chianti. 2009 is widely considered an excellent year and there will be a plethora of wines drinking excellently with the very best examples likely to cellar well for some time to come. A hard year to go wrong with.

Piedmont:
WS: Drink – A warm year with inconsistent ripening; the best reds offer immediate fruit and flesh, others show underripe tannins.
JR: Malic acid levels were overall below average, while the tannins did not always ripen fully. Quality is irregular, with excellence next to mediocrity.

Tuscany/Chianti:
WS: Drink – Rainy spring and September yielded soft, open-knit wines. The best show concentration and ripe fruit
JR: 2009s overall showed richness of fruit with good acidity, in many cases a certain jamminess looks likely to affect their ageing ability.
